A HOUSE OF LIGHT

Where the landscape comes inside

Set on almost an acre in one of The Gap’s most private pockets, Cambridge House is wrapped in established gardens and looks out over the treetops. Inside, raked ceilings, skylights and walls of floor-to-ceiling glass carry that outlook into almost every room.

The materials take their cue from the landscape. Herringbone oak runs through the living spaces, and in the lounge a travertine wall frames the fireplace. These are surfaces with texture and variation of their own, and they set a warm, natural register for everything placed among them.

In a home this open, art has an unusual job. It isn’t there to compete with the view; nothing on a wall could. Its role is to give the eye somewhere to settle within the room, a point of warmth and stillness against all that glass and light.

THE ART OF RESTRAINT

Works that hold their ground

In the dining area, beside the backlit stone bar, Espresso Form II brings the boldest note in the house. Its deep, organic forms draw on the darker tones of the oak and stone, anchoring a space that might otherwise drift out towards the deck.

In the lounge, Light Field takes a softer approach. Its pale, layered surface sits easily against the filtered light, adding depth without asking for attention.

Above the fireplace, White Ground carries that restraint further: A quiet work that rewards a second look.

It’s a useful principle for any home with a view: let the window do the talking, and choose art that gives each room its own centre of gravity.

Each work in this residence is made to order in our Gold Coast studio.
