A NEW FARM ADDRESS

Room for expression

With just five full-floor residences, YORK by GRAYA brings a sense of intimacy to apartment living. Designed by bureau^proberts, its curved forms draw on New Farm’s architectural heritage, while generous interiors open towards the north-east.

Here, the materials have plenty to say. Calacatta Viola marble gives the kitchen a dramatic centrepiece; timber joinery and herringbone floors lend warmth throughout. It is a strong setting for art, calling for pieces that can hold their own.

'Tobacco Road', placed above the fireplace does exactly that. Its loose, expansive composition breaks with the precision of the surrounding joinery, drawing the eye across the room. The architecture gives it a place; the painting gives that place its energy.

THE ART OF CONTINUITY

A thread through the rooms

There is an ease to the way the artworks relate across this residence. From the living room, the dining pair reads almost as a single composition, bringing colour to the far end of the space. Closer up, each work has enough presence to stand alone.

That relationship is what makes a pair so effective here. Together, the works give the dining area a clear identity within the larger room, without needing to separate it.

In the second lounge, the mood shifts. The artwork is lighter and more fluid, suited to a room that feels removed from the main entertaining space. A connection remains, but there is no need to repeat the same gesture.

It is a useful lesson in choosing art for a whole home: allow the rooms to speak to one another, and leave each enough freedom to be itself.
